The Pharmacognosy lab is a well-equipped laboratory. This lab handles drugs from natural sources such as plants, animals, minerals, and marine sources. This laboratory has been designed for systematic studies on crude drugs, as well as extraction, and isolation of bioactive constituents can also be done. The laboratory has instruments like a microscope, phase contrast microscope, projection microscope, hot air oven, microtome, centrifugation apparatus, muffle furnace, BOD, and autoclave.
This lab exposes the students to the macroscopic and microscopic features of cells, tissues, and different parts like stems, roots, flowers, leaves, fruit, and seed of natural plants. The Soxhlet apparatus extracts phytoconstituents, and the Clevenger apparatus for volatile oils. Students also learn the determination of the foreign matter in the adulterated specimens, analytical parameters like thin layer chromatography, physical parameters like ash values, total solid content, saponification value, and extractive values for identification and standardization of crude drugs.
